A Second Chance, A Brighter Future
When Rayona McNulty talks about earning her diploma, she doesn’t see it as the end of a journey. She sees it as the beginning of a new chapter.
“My diploma represents strength, perseverance, and determination,” Rayona says. “The day I graduate marks the beginning of my new life.”
Rayona’s path back to education has not been easy. As a teenager, family responsibilities forced her to put her own education on hold. She helped support her family, worked full-time, and took on caregiving responsibilities that required her to grow up quickly.
At just 19 years old, Rayona became the guardian and primary support system for her younger brothers. After the loss of both parents, she continued to care for her family while navigating grief, responsibility, and the demands of everyday life.
For years, pursuing her diploma felt out of reach.
Then she found the Perry County Literacy Council.
“The Literacy Council has given me a second chance at life,” Rayona says.
With the support of her instructor, Kristie, and the encouragement of the Literacy Council staff, Rayona began working toward a goal she had never given up on. Along the way, she found more than educational support. She found people who believed in her, encouraged her, and helped make her goals feel attainable.
“Their support, motivation, kindness, and understanding empowered me to take control of my future,” she says.
Today, Rayona is working toward earning her diploma, not only for herself, but for her children and family. She hopes her story inspires others who may feel that it’s too late to continue their education or pursue a dream.
“My journey has been long and winding, but it has led me to this moment. I am proud of the resilient, determined person I have become, and I am striving for a brighter future for myself and my children.”
Rayona’s story is a reminder that education changes lives, and that with support, determination, and opportunity, new beginnings are always possible.
